Property Management in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania

Wynnewood is an unincorporated Philadelphia suburb that lies within several jurisdictions: Lower Merion Township, Haverford Township, Montgomery County, and Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Wynnewood is one of the communities referred to as being on the Philadelphia main line. In this area, main line means that it is one of the affluent western suburbs of Philadelphia built along the Pennsylvania Railroad. The affluent mainline society is the backdrop for the 1940 Cary Grant and Kathryn Hepburn romantic comedy, The Philadelphia Story. Because most residents in the Wynnewood area work in Philadelphia, the rail line is now used for commuter train service.

Wynnewood, Pennsylvania Details

History

This area was part of the land given to William Penn in 1681 by King Charles II. It was mostly settled by Welsh Quakers and was a colonial farming community. In 1691, Wynnewood was named after Dr. Thomas Wynne, physician to William Penn and first Pennsylvania General Assembly Speaker. The Philadelphia Railroad was actually first established in the area in 1834. However, during the Civil War, many northerners became wealthy from manufacturing supplies needed for the war. After the war, the Industrial Revolution arrived and more private wealth was created. At the same time, the railroad decided to straighten the path of the railroad tracks and provide more commuter service. So the railroad bought up farms and sold large parcels to developers and wealthy business men. This period between 1865 and 1905 became the United States’ Gilded Age. Wealthy Philadelphia residents bought large parcels of land and built summer country estates with large houses and landscaped gardens. One of these is the Maybrook Mansion, built by liquor baron, Henry Gibson.

Things to Do in Wynnewood

Wynnewood Station

The Wynnewood Train Station, located at 67 Wynnewood Road, was built in 1870. It was used for the filming of the 1962 movie, David and Lisa. It has retail space for a gift shop and food service area that has been occupied by bakeries and cafes. Visit the station, watch the trains, do a little shopping, grab a snack, and then hop on a train for a fun excursion.

Maybrook Mansion

The Maybrook Mansion is located on Penn Road near the Wynnewood Station. The mansion was named after Gibson’s daughter, May and a brook that runs through the property. It was built with buff sandstone and red Vermont slate. The tower is 72′ high, and the main roof extends over the stable. The grounds required six gardeners in the winter and 25 in the summer. It has a German tile floor in the main hall and oak floors throughout the rest of the house. It has oak, walnut, butternut, and mahogany woodwork in different rooms. A music room, library, ballroom, and carriage house were added to the mansion. A 250-unit apartment complex, The Reserve at Maybrook, is being built on the grounds. However, the mansion is an historic landmark and will be used for offices and a community center for the complex.

Wynnewood Valley Park Sensory Garden

The Wynnewood Valley Park Sensory Garden started as the Garden for the Blind and Children in 1977. It was created by the Ardmore Rotary Club and Lower Merion Township. The Men’s Garden Club of Delaware Valley maintained it for 30 years. In 2009, the Ardmore Rotary Club, the Lower Merion Township, and the Lower Merion Conservancy rebuilt the park with a donation from the Kistler-Tiffany Foundation. The garden now has native plants that engage all five senses including fruit for tasting. There are plants to attract butterflies and birds, and a wind chime adds to the bird songs. There are also small animals like chipmunks to watch, and it is all completely accessible. It is located at 1505 Remington Road.
